FIRE ANTS
The Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta -
(Buren)
- Highly aggressive; if disturbed they will rush out, attack and
sting.
- Inflict a fiery painful sting; Injury & health concerns
due to multiple stings.
- Single queen mounds can number 30-100 per area with up to 250,000
ants each.
- Fire ants are known to kill small & large livestock as
well as pets.
- Mounds can be found throughout the pasture (possibly causing
injury to horses) or under items such as boards, rocks, landscape
timbers, firewood piles, sprinkler heads, meter boxes, at the
base of trees, shrubs, under mulch and homes.
- Only 1/3 of the total nest is the mound, the other 2/3 is located
under ground; the typical mound is dome in shape and can measure
over a foot in diameter.
